Description:
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is an international voluntary Catholic organization that was founded in 1833 by a group of young intellectuals headed by Frédéric Ozanam. The organization’s activities spread rapidly to dozens of countries and it remains active today. The Bulletin of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was a monthly religious journal containing primarily sermons and hagiographic accounts of saints. According to the bulletin’s first issue, which was published in July 1932, its aim was “to inform its participants of the organization’s progress in reaching its goals and to alleviate the hardships of the poor through its actions.” The statement at the bottom of the page, “we have a wonderful history, and worthy roots of which we should be proud,” suggests that a secondary goal was to raise public awareness of the organization’s rich Arabic-Catholic history. The bulletin was printed in the Commercial Printing House in Jerusalem, and a subscription was five Palestinian cents. The journal contained many pictures and an image of the saint features prominently on the masthead.
