Al-Minbar (The Pulpit) was a non-partisan journal on social, economic, and cultural matters that had two stated objectives, outlined in the editorial to the first issue: to cover news from the Arab Orthodox community and to contribute to “nation building” and “national training.” The journal published articles by first-rate Palestinian and Lebanese scholars and writers, Muslims and Christians alike, such as Ahmad Samih al-Khalidi (Jerusalem, 1896-1951), director of the Teacher Training College in Jerusalem and editor of the newspaper, Al-Kuliyya al-'Arabiyya (1927); the historian Nicola Ziyada (b. Damascus to parents from Nazareth, 1907-2006); the writer and artist Jabra Ibrahim Jabra (Bethlehem, 1920-1994); and Khalil Baydas (Nazareth, 1874-1949).
